    In short yes to all.
Usually wine is made in a 1 gallon demijohn with a cork in the top and a water trap in it. This allows the carbon dioxide, a product of fermantation to escape without letting in air and bugs which may spoil the wine.
Beer you really need somthing which will allow a little pressure to build up so the beer is not flat.
You can use ordinary yeast – brewers yeast is better and will give you a higher alcohol content because it works longer.
A hydrometer would be useful to check the alcohol content and tell when the fermentation is really finished.
Lots and lots of web sites and forums. Google wine or beer making and take your pick.

It’s great fun and really cheap. Probably worth buying a few basic bits of hardware.

iggymydo, firstly, I don’t know where you are.

Secondly, I don’t know why you bother going through all that rubbish, when you can go direct to one of these like Home Brew places, as long as you bottle it (the wine) or can the beer, these places will make it for you, it works out cheaper in the long run, you do not have mess, and the biggest cost saving you don’t ave wastage. If something goes wrong, they wear it not you.

Besides they have all the equipment so you save on that also.

OK, I’m going to answer all of your questions, and I EXPECT 10 points for this.

    - You can use normal yeast, it will have the reaction, but you probably won’t like the taste. There are various "brewers yeasts", available anywhere that sells home brew products.

    - You don’t need to necessarily buy specific containers, you can convert almost any container to work. You basically need two containers that are airtight, and can be set up with a vent. Most home brew kits do their first stage fermenting in a plastic bucket. Then transfer it to a glass jug. You can get everything you need at the hardware store. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, or is going to work well for you.

    - As far as web-sites, the best you’re going to find it one that simply explains the fermentation process. You could probably look up on wikipedia and find out how to build a rough hygrometer. It’s going to be rather difficult to do this without at least having a hygrometer. This will tell you the alcohol/sugar of your wine. Without one, you basically are working from trial and error, and would have to reproduce the same conditions over and over and over to figure out what you have. This might be hard to do, because from the way your question is written, I’m wondering if you’re going to try this in your tree fort.?.?.

-I don’t know exactly where you live, but in most places, IF YOU ARE LEGAL DRINKING AGE, you can brew your own wine, beer, for personal consumption, but not distill alcohol. (without a liscence)

-Home winemaking kits are inexpensive, If you’re legal drinking age, I’m not sure why you don’t just buy one. It will come with everything you need to do it right, and cost less than $100.

-There, I’ve answered all your questions. You might not like the answer, but a deal is a deal. I would stay away from your plan,, you’re more likely to get sick than drunk.
